I have a 1884 Trapdoor (mfg. date 1886) for sale. This model has the Buffington rear sight which is an engineering marvel in itself. Rifle is original but the stock was trimmed to carbine length & a Shinabel added by some previous owner. Also, the stock was revarnished in the past but the original inspection cartouche remains intact. A few spots of varnish splash are visible on the bluing but can be easily removed.
All mechanicals are tight & original. Breechblock has no vertical slop on lockup but does have slight lateral play which is typical for these rifles. No external pitting & bluing is nice. The bore is nice but does show the wear expected for its age. I have not slugged the bore but a .458 bullet will not drop past the crown so a 405gr .458 HB or .459 500gr should be perfect.
